Dietetics

What does a dietitian do?

A dietitian assesses a person’s diet and provides nutrition education. Dieticians work with people to achieve their goals by implementing strategies that are suitable to a person’s lifestyle, capabilities and preferences.

Nutrition assessment and planning meals
Assessing the dietary intake and requirements of people one-on-one in clinic, in their homes, or via Telehealth. Dietitians assist with planning meals based on a person’s preferences, budget, cooking skills, allergies and intolerances.

Education and dietary counselling
Educating people about evidence-based nutrition and providing support with behaviour change.

Oral nutritional supplementation
Directing people to trial nutrition supplement drinks to prevent or treat malnutrition.

Specialised diets during illness and recovery
Helping people to amend their dietary intake with higher nutrition needs and lower appetites. For example, increasing energy and protein intake for wound management, surgery recovery, cancer and treatment, and lung disease.
